Door County is on a peninsula between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, in the state of Wisconsin. It’s known for its long shoreline and many parks. Peninsula State Park on Green Bay is home to sheltered Nicolet Beach, with its calm waters. On Lake Michigan, Newport State Park is a wilderness park crisscrossed with trails. Potawatomi State Park, in Sturgeon Bay, is fringed by limestone cliffs.
Door County’s Green Bay side has the true escarpment with exposed dolomite rock 200-250 feet high. At the base of these rock faces are remnants of the chunks of stone that fall from the cliffs to form “talus.” The talus has a whole sensitive ecosystem that can be degraded by overuse and too many people wanting to view the wonders found there. Some of the oldest living trees in all of the Midwest, some are almost 1200 years old, are found on the Escarpment. These trees are the deformed, barely alive, white cedars found on the rock cliffs. Interestingly, the same tree growing in optimum conditions lives only 1/3 as long as the “cliff hangers.”
In Door County, the landscape slopes downward to the Lake Michigan side in what is known as a “cuesta,” or a “dip slope plain” in geology speak. Generally, on the Lakeside there are sand beaches and shallow inland lakes that are the remnants of glacial bays that have filled in over time. We have two different coastal water characteristics in this little county and over 241 rare species, including the Hines Emerald Dragonfly, several species of orchid, ferns, and salamanders.
The map is made of eight different layers of hardwood formed together to depict the bathymetric levels of this area. Each layer is stained with a specific color according to the depths of the water. It’s assembled to represent an accurate portrayal at this scale of these wonderful shorelines. This makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves the cliffs and bluffs of the escarpment. The amazing beaches and crisp weather draw thousands of visitors every year. Amazing details and shipwrecks abound. Enjoy it year-round with our 3D map! Our maps are handcrafted for each order – we include a star or heart for your location if you would like. The typical time for production is 7-10 working days.
